Joel Barlow, American poet and diplomat. Famous for his Vision of Columbus, he spent many years in both England and France participating in the pamphlet debates surrounding the French Revolution. In France, he and his wife became close friends with Mary Wollstonecraft -- to whom they introduced Gilbert Imlay in 1793. In 1805 Barlow returned to the United States, where he would eventually work as an unofficial advisor to presidents Jefferson and Madison. To Thomas Clio Rickman, bookseller and reformer : 1 autograph letter signed : 21 Jul 1803 : (MISC 3559) : begins: "I rec'd your note last evening ...".
