Herbert Stanley Morrison, 1888-1965, left school at fourteen and had a variety of jobs, including errand boy, telephone operator, shop assistant, and deputy circulation manager of the 'Daily Citizen'. He became part-time secretary of London Labour Party in 1915 and entered local government in 1919, becoming Mayor and later Alderman of Hackney.
