James Hogg was born in Ettrick, Selkshire, Scotland in November 1770. Having received little formal education, Hogg taught himself to read and write in his late teens. He continued to work as a labourer and shepherd for twenty five years. Between 1794-1810 Hogg wrote songs which appeared in magazines and in two small collections. Norah Parr, author, was a descendant of James Hogg 's daughter Harriet, who married Robert Gilkison and emigrated to New Zealand in 1879 . She developed an interest in her great-grandfather, prompting her to draft a biography of Hogg, which was published in 1980 .
