Sir William Scott (1745-1836), later Lord Stowell, Judge, MP, was the fourth child and eldest son of William Scott, a coal-shipper of Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was a lawyer and a friend of Johnson. He was elected MP for Oxford University in 1801, and was raised to the Peerage as Lord Stowell, after the estate he purchased, in 1821.
