Viviane Bryant (nee Hindmarsh) was born in France, her father was an English journalist, and her mother was French. She was educated in Alnwick then at the Godolphin and Latymer School, London and came to Girton to read Classics 1940-43. She was an Amelia Gurney Scholar and received the Alice Zimmern Memorial Prize in 1943.
