It was originally called Tounis College, when part of a legacy left by Robert Reid, Bishop of Orkney in 1558 had established a college of which the Town Council had gained control to establish a College of Law on the South side of Edinburgh. George Halley was born in Dundee in 1867 and was educated at Clifton College, Dundee Institution and Broughty Ferry School. He took his MA in 1887 and studied medicine at Edinburgh University between 1888 and 1892. He then seems to have returned to Dundee and is listed in the Dundee Directory at Nethergate, and later Airlie Place between 1897 and 1909.
