John Charlton Steen was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1898, the son of a teacher. He was educated at Paisley Grammar School, Paisley, and the University of Glasgow where he received an MA. He served in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and later in the 2/1 Lanarkshire Yeomanry in the Great War from 1917-1919. He briefly lectured in Italian and Comparative Literature at the University of Glasgow in the 1922-1923 session before being licensed by the Presbytery of Glasgow in 1...
