Dugald Sutherland MacColl was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1859 and educated at the Glasgow Academy, University College School, University College London and Lincoln College, Oxford and studied under Frederick Brown, Professor of Fine Art in London. He exhibited regularly with the New English Art Club and worked as an art critic successively on Spectator, Saturday Review, and Week-end Review.
