Francis Reginald Wingate was born at Broadfield, Renfrewshire, on 25 June 1861. He was educated at St. James's Collegiate School and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He served with the Royal Artillery in India and Aden, and joined the Egyptian Army in 1883. He was Commandant of the Cholera Hospital, acted as aide-de-camp to General Sir Evelyn Wood during the Nile Expedition and in the Bayuda desert, 1884-1885, acted as Governor of the Red Sea littoral, was a member of a special mission t...
