John Halliday Croom was born in Sanquhar, Dumfries, on 15 January 1847. He was educated at the Royal High School in the city, and then studied at Edinburgh University. He also studied in London and Paris. For several years Croom was an Assistant to the Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the University of Edinburgh and he was also a Lecturer on Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Edinburgh School of Medicine, which was then at Minto House.
