Sidney Thomas Mayow Newman was born 4 March 1906. He was educated at Clifton College, and then he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music, London. From 1930 to 1941 he was a lecturer in music at Armstrong College (later King's College) Newcastle-upon-Tyne (University of Durham).
