According to The Oxford Companion to the Literature of Wales, Brut y Tywysogion is a chronicle of the princes, beginning with the death of Cadwaladr Fendigaid in 682 and ending with the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1282. The chronicle is found in two versions which are translations of a lost Latin text written as a continuation of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae . John Edward Lloyd was born on 5 May 1861 at Liverpool. His family originally hailed from Penybontfawr, Montgomeryshire, and Lloyd remained loyal to these roots throughout his life. He was educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and subsequently at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 1885 with a first class degree in history.
