Dai Dan Evans was born in 1898 in Abercrave. He left school aged 14 in order to work in the mines. When he was 16, Dai Dan volunteered for the army but was turned down because of his age. A couple of years later he registered as a conscientious objector. During the following 15 years Dai Dan moved pit 13 times and even emigrated to Canada at one stage in order to look for work in the lignite mines of Alberta.
