Friends within this area of the East Riding were originally part of Selby Meeting, which had been settled by 1665 and was recorded in 1669 as a constituent of York Monthly Meeting. A separate Meeting seems to have emerged in Skipwith by 1670, when large numbers of Friends suffered distraint of goods for holding meetings for worship in the village.
