Thomas Scattergood, son of the Rev. T. Scattergood, was born in Huddersfield in 1826. In 1846 he was appointed to the post of assistant apothecary at the General Infirmary at Leeds, subsequently qualifying as MRCS and LSA, and then going into general practice in Leeds early in 1851, the same year that he became a lecturer in chemistry at the Leeds School of Medicine.
