Margaret Elizabeth Galt, known as Betty, was born in 1927. She attended Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow, leaving in 1944. She enrolled in the Glasgow School of Art in September of 1944, at the age of 17. She followed the two year general course followed by a 2 year diploma.
