William Ewart Gladstone, prime minister and author, was born in Liverpool, on Dec. 29, 1809; the fifth child and youngest son of Sir John Gladstone and Anne Mackenzie Gladstone. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, in preparation for a future in the British political world. William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) entered Parliament as a Conservative MP in 1832 and remained there until 1895, serving under successive Tory and Liberal governments, except for a period spent as Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1845-1847.
