Robert Gibbings (1889-1958) was an Irish author and artist best known for his wood engravings. The English writer Mary Butts was born in Parkstone, Dorset, the daughter of Captain F. J. Butts (grandson of Blake's patron Thomas Butts) and Mary (Briggs) Butts. Although she earned a degree in social work in 1914, she devoted herself exclusively to writing from about 1916.
