Mary Griffin was the youngest daughter of John Griffin, a wealthy silk weaver and Mary Guillemard. She married John Augustus Francis Simpkinson in 1814. They had two sons John and Francis and three daughters Louisa, Emma and Marianne Jane. Mary was the younger sister of Jane Griffin who married the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin.
