Maria Josepha Stanley (nee Holroyd) was born in 1771, daughter of John Baker Holroyd, first Earl of Sheffield. In October 1796, she married John Thomas Stanley, seventh baronet, who was elevated to the peerage as Baron Stanley of Alderley in 1839. They had nine surviving children, including Isabella Louisa (1801-1839) who married the Arctic explorer William Edward Parry in 1826. She was widowed in 1850 and died in 1863.
