Gertrude [Gatty] Parry was born in 1788 in Bath, daughter of the eminent physician Caleb Hillier Parry and sister to the Arctic explorer William Edward Parry. After the death of William Edward Parry's wife, Isabella, in 1839, Gertrude moved into the family home in London, taking care of her brother's four children before his second marriage in 1841.
