Gerald C Torrens was a contemporary of the Antarctic explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard (assistant zoologist, British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913). During the First World War (1914-1918) Torrens was a member of the Machine Gun Corps. Founded in October 1915 the corps depot and training centre was situated at Grantham.
