George Strong Nares was born on 24 April 1831 at Straloch, near Aberdeen. He was educated at the Royal Naval School, New Cross and entered the Royal Navy in July 1845. He passed his lieutenant's examination in 1852, serving that year as second mate in HMS Resolute on the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1852-1854 (Captains Henry Kellett and Francis Leopold McClintock).
