Lawrence Edward Grace Oates was born in Putney, London, on 17 March 1880. He was educated at Eton College and privately until 1898, when he was gazetted to a militia regiment. Two years later, he joined the Iniskilling Dragoons, a cavalry regiment, and served with distinction in the Boer War in South Africa. George Seaver was born in Cheltenham in 1890. He was educated at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and was ordained in 1925. His association with Cheltenham brought him into contact with Edward Adrian Wilson's sister, Ida, and wife, Oriana, who put at Seaver's disposal the primary source material for his three character studies of Wilson, published between 1933 and 1948.
