George Francis Arthur Mulock was born in 1882. He was educated at Stanmore Park and Dartmouth and qualified in marine surveying while serving on HMS Triton . In 1902, he joined the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), initially as sub-lieutenant on board the relief ship Morning, but in 1903 taking the place of Ernest Henry Shackleton in the shore party.
