George Back was born on 6 November 1796 in Stockport, Cheshire. In 1808, he entered the Royal Navy, serving off the coasts of France and Spain until French soldiers captured him. He spent five years as a prisoner of war before returning to England in 1814, later serving as midshipman until 1817.
