Frank Plumley was born in Clevedon, Somerset on 5 May 1875. After attending the local school, he served an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and wheelwright before enlisting in the Royal Navy. He joined the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), as a stoker, proving useful in building and repairing the expedition's sledges and hardware.
