Emily Bowers (nee Webb) was a headmistress of a school in Sidmouth, Devon, which she left to take up work in the Missions Schools of the Malay Peninsula. Here, she met and married Captain Alexander Bowers and had two daughters, Mary and Edith, and, on returning to Greenock in Scotland, gave birth to a son, Henry, in 1883.
