Edward W. Nelson was born in 1883. He was educated at Clifton, Tonbridge and Cambridge University. He was working at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory when he joined the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), as biologist. He took part in a sledging journey to One Ton Depot, carrying food supplies for the returning polar party.
