David Wilson Barker served on HMS Worcester the Royal Navy training ship that had once been home to Henry Bowers. Bowers was a member of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), he undertook the winter journey to the Cape Crozier emperor penguin rookery with Edward Wilson and Apsley Cherry-Garrard and later was a member of the Pole Party (Scott, Wilson, Edgar Evans and Lawrence Oates) who attained the South Pole on 17 January 1912.
