Charles Edward Fagan was born in 1855. He started work at the British Museum in 1873 becoming secretary of the Natural History department from 1919 onwards. It was through his connections with the British Museum and as a member of the Royal Geographical Society (of which he was a fellow) that he was involved with both the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 and the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (both led by Robert Falcon Scott).
