Joseph Hallsworth was born in Audenshaw, near Manchester, on 2 December 1884. After attending commercial and technical schools in Manchester he became in 1902 confidential clerk to the Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Co-operative Employees. He later became Assistant Secretary of the AUCE and in 1916 was appointed Secretary.
