Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), antiquary and bibliophile, was born at Manchester on 2 July 1792, and attended Rugby and University College, Oxford. Over the course of his life Phillipps developed an extensive collection of books and manuscripts, including old Welsh poetry and oriental manuscripts. Alwyn Faber Scholfield (1884-1969) was Cambridge University Librarian, 1923-1949. He attended Eton before coming to King's College, Cambridge, in 1903, where he gained a second in both parts of the Classical Tripos.
