John Robert Seeley (1834-1895), historian and essayist, was born in London on 10 September 1834. He attended the City of London School and Christ's College, Cambridge (B.A., 1857), where he became a Fellow and Lecturer in Classics. He was appointed Chief Classical Assistant at the City of London School in 1859, and Professor of Latin at University College, London, in 1863.
