English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford. On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items. Francis John Henry Jenkinson (1853-1923) was born at Forres, Morayshire, on 20 August 1853. He was educated at a private school at Woodcote, near Henley-on-Thames, and at Marlborough College. In 1872 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1876; M.A., 1879), where he became a Fellow in 1878. Frederic William Maitland (1850-1906), son of John Gorham Maitland, was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took the moral sciences tripos (B.A., 1873; M.A. 1876). Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), antiquary and bibliophile, was born at Manchester on 2 July 1792, and attended Rugby and University College, Oxford. Over the course of his life Phillipps developed an extensive collection of books and manuscripts, including old Welsh poetry and oriental manuscripts.
