Robert Mackenzie Beverley (1798-1868) was born at Beverley, Yorkshire. He attended Richmond School, and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1816 (LL.B., 1821). Thereafter, he lived at Beverley, becoming a Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant. In 1833 he published A letter to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester, Chancellor, on the present corrupt state of the University, which received much criticism, including a rebuff from The Times . Adam Sedgwick was one of the founders of modern geology. He proposed the Devonian period of the geological timescale.
