Robert Mackenzie Beverley (1798-1868) was born at Beverley, Yorkshire. He attended Richmond School, and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1816 (LL.B., 1821). Thereafter, he lived at Beverley, becoming a Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant. In 1833 he published A letter to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester, Chancellor, on the present corrupt state of the University, which received much criticism, including a rebuff from The Times . Adam Sedgwick was one of the founders of modern geology. He proposed the Devonian period of the geological timescale. Later, he proposed the Cambrian period, based on work which he did on Welsh rock strata.
