Evans was born in Birmingham in 1884. He was a pupil and collaborator of E.H. Starling, with whom he worked at University College, London, 1911-1916, and at the Royal Army Medical College at Millbank, 1916-1918, where Starling was in charge of the Anti-gas Department. After a brief stay at Leeds University as Professor of Experimental Physiology, he returned to London to work in the department of H.H.
