The University of Edinburgh was established by Royal Charter in 1582 . It was originally called Tounis College, when part of a legacy left by Robert Reid, Bishop of Orkney in 1558 had established a college of which the Town Council had gained control to establish a College of Law on the South side of Edinburgh. John Dixon Comrie was born in 1875 and trained as a physician. He pursued a career as a physician and medical historian. In 1908 he became responsible for teaching Medical History at Edinburgh University, while from 1927 to his death in 1939 he was Physician to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
