Charles Lamb was born to John and Elizabeth (Field) Lamb in London on February 10, 1775. Two of his siblings survived to adulthood, John (1763-1821) and Mary Ann (1764-1847). Charles Lamb studied at Christ's Hospital but left the school at the age of fifteen due to his chronic stammering. Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law.
