The archive contains material collected and compiled by Millar throughout his career. The content pertains to his interest in XVIth and XVIIth century British and European art, with some reference to the XVIIIth century. The archive is arranged into ten sequences reflecting the manner in which it was originally organised by Millar: -journals of visits to collections and artists (arranged as numbered by Millar) -research files on artists (organised A-Z by artist) and subjects The files are a visual and textual resource, containing photographs and images collected by Millar throughout his career. They also include correspondence with owners, academics and auction houses, and research notes. The remainder of the material has been organised into the following series: -notes on XVIIth and XVIIIth century written sources; and inventories and papers -notes prepared for the publication of Van Dyck: a complete catalogue of the paintings -material removed from books in Millar's library; and volumes annotated by Millar -assorted other writings including speech notes and conferences on Van Dyck -photographs of paintings hanging in private collections

Margaret Lucas was born at St John's Abbey, Essex and was the youngest child of Thomas and Elizabeth Lucas. Although her parents were wealthy, they were completely untitled. She was privately tutored and in 1642 was sent to live with her sister in Oxford, where the royal court was residing. Margaret became a maid of honour to Queen Henrietta Maria, and in 1644, accompanied her mistress into exile in Paris.
