This material consists of copies of black and white, general interest photographs from a family album loaned for copying. In addition, 33 loose photographs were donated. These consist of seven black and white silver gelatin prints (copies) Aotearoa Series (N399, N294, N260, N257, N261, N348, N235); one black and white, silver gelatin print Aotearoa (original) N760; one black and white, silver gelatin print of Knox Church; one toned silver transfer print of the University of Otago Clock Tower and one photograph of the New Zealand Maori Rugby team 1926. There are twelve black and white, silver gelatin prints of Antarctic Expeditions, Ellsworth, City of New York; two black and white, silver gelatin prints of ships, C.A. Larson; one black and white, silver gelatin print of shipping, American Fleet and two black and white, silver gelatin prints of Hawke's Bay East Coast Aero Club [NB. Jean Batten). There are also six unidentified black and white, silver gelatin prints. Many of these are scenic views of New Zealand from the Aotearoa Series by Hugh and G.K. Neill.

Jean Batten was born on 15 September 1909 in Rotorua, New Zealand. She and her mother moved from New Zealand to Britain in 1930 where Batten immediately pursued her ambition of learning to fly.
