The series consists of correspondence, memoranda, news clippings, photographs, maps, blueprints, charts, meeting minutes, reports and copies of legislation relating to Native Americans in the United States. The records concern economic and educational opportunities for Native Americans both on and off Reservations. The majority of the records focus on health and medical care, civil rights, community services, education, jobs and economic development and the claims of specific Native American groups. The series includes records related to the occupation of Alcatraz. These records include photographs of the island during the occupation, proposals from the occupiers for the future of the island, and correspondence relating to the movement. The series also includes records relating to Native American interests and activities relating to the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, Health, Education, Welfare, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Labor.
