Henry M. Pellatt fonds (F 253)

Fonds consists of personal and business correspondence, property and legal papers, including deeds, agreements, wills, correspondence, and financial records, which have been filed sequentially. Also included are biographical and family historical material, such as letters of congratulations on Pellatt's receipt of knighthood in 1905, and some business records of Pellatt's father, Henry Senior. Fonds also includes records of various family members, including Lady Mary Pellatt, Fred Pellatt, Mary Kate Hamilton and Reg Pellatt. Also included are Henry Pellatt's estate records, property records relating to the Sherbourne St. residence, Southwood, Orillia, Spadina Gardens, Lake Marie, and #7 Windsor Terrace, including a photograph and two subdivision plans. It also includes records relating to the acquisition of: the steamboat "Lorna Doone," an organ for Casa Loma, and a mausoleum. Fonds also includes insurance records from Canada Life, Gresham Life, Scottish Union, and Employer's Liability. Miscellaneous items are also included, such as the Act to wind up the affairs of the Bank of Upper Canada, 1866, and horoscopes of 1900-1905. Upon receipt, records had been organized into numbered files. This organization were retained for the most part to the number 67, from which point files were reorganized by the processing archivist to bring together items relating to the same matters or subject.

Henry Mill Pellatt, 1859-1939

Born in 1859, Henry Pellatt was educated at the Model School of Upper Canada in Toronto. He attended Upper Canada College for three months, and then quit to join his father's stockbroker's firm Pellatt and Osler, as a junior accounting clerk. He was known as a athlete at school, and in the years 1878-79 won many running races in the one mile category, setting a record which stood for seventy-five years until broken by Roger Bannister at the Empire Games.
