This series includes correspondence, memorandums, reports, and cables. The records document the condition of German churches, policy governing religious affairs in the American Zone, and the responsibilities of the Religious Affairs Branch and its sections. Specific subjects covered include laws and regulations pertaining to religious affairs, the legal and financial status of German churches, cultural exchange and other reorientation programs, denazification, religious education, interfaith activities, activities of international religious agencies within Germany, and conferences and exhibits. A substantial portion of the individual subject files consist of correspondence with German churchmen, German religious institutions, and international religious groups. The records were maintained by the Religious Affairs Branch and its predecessor.
