This series consists of memorandums, letters, daily logs, after action reports, court documents, newspaper and magazine clippings, and other records relating primarily to the United States Army’s involvement with the integration of the University of Mississippi by James Howard Meredith in 1962, and the subsequent legal and military issues that arose from him attending the university, as well as other African Americans. The series, which is Legal Opinion Precedent File case number 62/4877, contains two files, labeled Volume II of III and Volume III of III, covering primarily the periods, 1962-1963 and 1966. Volume II contains extensive information regarding the utilization of United States Army personnel at the University of Mississippi and the United States Army’s denial of a request by Mississippi civilian authorities for surrender of a soldier to answer to State criminal charges. Volume III contains extensive information on the so-called (by the United States Army) “Meredith Mississippi Freedom March,” in June 1966. Included is daily information on the marchers and prominent African Americans involved in the march, including Floyd McKissick (Congress of Racial Equality), Stokely Carmichael (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee), Charles Evers (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), Ralph Abernathy (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), and James Meredith. Both files contain extensive information about the operations of United States Army Forces, Oxford (USAFOX), commanded by Colonel William A. Lynch, who were assigned to provide protection for James Meredith at the University of Mississippi at Oxford.
