1913-1951

This series consists of decimal correspondence. The records include letters received and copies of letters sent, forms, reports, maps, invoices, receipts, minutes, telegrams, vouchers, and other documents created or received in the course of operating the agency. There is correspondence with all classes of agency correspondents, from the Office of Indian Affairs (Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1947) to business firms, agency employees and private individuals. While the superintendent's office was directly involved in the creation or receipt of much of the documentation, other agency officials and administrative divisions are also represented. Topics include Bismarck Indian School, Chemawa Indian School, Fort Totten Indian School, Wahpeton Indian School, fairs and expositions, census, enrollment, Indian allotments, tribal government, leases, Indians in U.S. armed forces, Indian relief and rehabilitation, Indian hospitals, health, and vital statistics about birth, death, marriage and divorce.
