This series consists of quarterly payrolls of employees (form 5-330a) for the fourth quarter 1915, third quarter 1916, first quarter 1918, and fourth quarter 1918. These payrolls were used to record receipt of payments by employees. General information provided includes name, title, and institution of person making the report. Information on employees includes name, authorized position or occupation, number of authority for irregular service, number of appropriation account, time employed, rate of pay, amount paid, date of check or cash payment, number of check, and remarks. The series includes employee time reports (form 5-706) for April-June 1918. Information provided is name and designation, cost account number of hours worked each day, total time, rate, amount earned, and total.

Established in 1893, the Pipestone Indian School was built on land taken from the Yankton reservation at the Pipestone Quarry. The Yankton people long contested that loss and won before the Supreme Court in 1926. In 1894 the formation of the Pipestone Indian Training School was authorized on the uninhabited Yankton Pipestone reservation.
