Sergeant Edward Israel, American arctic explorer (born July 1, 1859, at Kalamazoo, Mich.-died May 27, 1884, Camp Clay, Canada) was educated at the University of Ann Arbor, Mich. He joined the Signal Corps of the United States Army and became a sergeant. In 1881 Israel volunteered for the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, under the command of Gen. A. W. Sergeant Hampden Sidney Gardiner (born January 18, 1859, Philadelhpia, Pa.-died June 12, 1884, Canada) was a member of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, 1881-1884. Gardiner recorded weather and tidal data and specialized in making instruments. He rebuilt a chronograph, an instrument for observing the stars in connection with Earth's rotation. Although he broke his leg in November, 1881 and was immobile for nearly three months, A. W. Greely said Gardiner's "spirits never failed him." He died...
