This series contains two types of forms from the Office of Indian Affairs. The "Reports on Promotions of Pupils" list school years and statistical data regarding annual enrollments; June enrollments; numbers of students examined, passed condition (i.e. conditionally passed), and failed; percentage passed of those examined; and percentage passed of those enrolled. Each category is subdivided into male or female and by divisions of the school (e.g. primary, prevocational, and vocational). The "Reports on Examinations" list students alphabetically by surname, separately for each class level and sex. For each student the form gives ages; days of attendance; and, by subject, numerical grades for class work, the types of examinations taken, and a grade average received for each examination taken. Also listed is an overall grade average for each student and an indication whether the student was promoted or failed.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902.
