This series contains correspondence, reports, telegrams, purchase orders, vouchers, leases, circulars, student and employee records. Subjects include day schools and contract schools on the Capitan Grande, La Jolla, Pala, Pauma, and Rincon reservations, allotments, health, law and order, agriculture, irrigation, procurement, Indian fairs and fiestas, marriage and divorce, World War I, and other issues arising on the San Pasqual, Syucan, Mesa Grande, Volcan (Santa Ysabel), Los Conejos and Los Coyotes reservations. Correspondents include officials from the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., Haskell Institute, Sherman Institute, Phoenix Indian School, St. Anthony's Indian Boarding School in San Diego, and superintendents at the Soboba Superintendency and Campo Superintendency. Of particular note is correspondence documenting the development of the lace making industry among Indian women, the development of a reservoir by the Cuyamaca Water Company on the Capitan Grande reservation, and planning for the Wanamaker Expedition in 1913.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient. By 1901 a site in the city of Riverside was selected, at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street. On July 19, 1901, the cornerstone was laid for the new school building of Sherman Institute, and the school officially opened on September 9, 1902. Haskell Indian Industrial Training School is a public tribal land-grant university in Lawrence, Kansas, United States.
